Introducing: From My Tractor Cab for Agri-View

I am very pleased to introduce my new column with the publication Agri-View titled "From My Tractor Cab." The series will feature my experiences dairy farming in rural Wisconsin and the people who have kept life interesting. My first article, published March 9, 2018, is about the profound impact a simple tractor cab has had on my life and the laborious tasks that fill it each day.

Here is an excerpt from that article:

I can divide my farming career into two eras – b.c. or before cab, and a.c. or after cab. “Before cab” brings back a sunburned memory of spearing a round bale on a July afternoon with my White Utility Tractor, rousing a nest of wasps from beneath the bale. I jumped off the seat and ran across the field flailing with my cap while the tractor idled, radiating in the mid -summer sun. The fender-mounted radio blared the Brewer’s game across the field. It was an away game at Wrigley Field; Bob Uecker was singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch. I think there were two outs in the top of the eighth before the hive dispersed and I could remount.

Before cab also included a good four months of 15-minute cold-weather winter wear prep time before using the tractor to do even the briefest of chores. Multiply those 15 minutes by an average of three times per day on our dairy farm and you’ve used up three-fourths of an hour dressing for the cold weather. Did I mention ice pellets, thunderstorms and horseflies in my before-cab era?
